Art & Culture

The  Liberty County Performing Arts Council brings to Chester selected cultural opportunities for the community in the performing arts. Liberty Village Arts Center and Gallery, also located in Chester, sponsors local, state, and national visual and graphic art shows and workshops on a year round basis. The art center is open year round on Tuesday through Friday and Sundays from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The art center also houses a small gift shop of original art work which includes pottery, paper, wheat, and metal sculptures, jewelry, photographs, paintings and much more including tapes and cd’s by international pianist Phil Aaberg, a Chester native who returns to the area regularly to perform and support the local arts programs.  Both groups actively encourage local elementary school, high school, and adult artists by incentive awards and opportunities to exhibit their work.

The Liberty County Museum, located three blocks south of US Highway #2, stresses authentic displays of the Homestead Era. The museum is open from Memorial Day through September 15. Information can be obtained at the courthouse.

The Liberty County Library, located across from the courthouse, has approximately 3,500 volumes and provides many services for the community.  The library has recently expanded its services to include a number of computers available for community use at it’s facility.
