Agriculture

Farming and ranching are the principal industries of Liberty County with 97% of Liberty County's land area active in grain and cattle production. Rich soil provides nourishment for vast fields of wheat and barley, and miles of grazing for cattle both in the Sweetgrass Hills and on the plains. Average farm size in Liberty County is about 3,140 acres.  The greatest majority of the approximate 540,000 cultivated acres are used in dryland farming operations.  Most of the farming is done under the alternate crop or fallow system to build moisture reserve and to carry out weed control programs.  Colorful strip or contour farming are used for erosion control.  Excellent malting and feed barley are raised here and some of the finest hard red wheat in the world.
